I tested the auto return in a flat area and it flew back well, but I don't exactly remember how it flew.
Now I'm in the mountains.
If I have understood correctly the drone altide return setting is calculated from the drone altitude and not from the GPS.
For example I flew and started from 1016m and fly over the mountain ridge up to 1420m which was 40m higher than the top (the drone was about 350m horizontally from me).
If it would have auto returned would it have dropped right away to 30m higher than the controller (to the woods) or would it flight same altitude over me and then drop the altitude?

RTH altitude is relative to your launch height (consider that 0m, based on GPS). If you set RTH at, say, 50m, then it will increase altitude to that height (your launch altitude + 50m) if it is flying below that height, or if it is more than 50m above launch height it will return home at its current altitude.

It doesn't descend to RTH altitude to come home if it's already above that height.
