.... but I ordered a Mavic instead.
I first heard that DJI was going to come out with their own drone in May 2015. I wasn't in a hurry to get a drone so I've just been following drone tech since about that time. The Phantom 3 looked good, but horror stories of poor customer service kept me at bay. The Phantom 4 came and looked even better, but I still felt like the "next best thing" was just around the corner. I was sure that was going to be the GoPro drone.
The announcement came! The Karma looked good, but I was immediately unimpressed by the barely average battery life, lack of obstacle avoidance, and mediocre range. Not even a "follow me" mode! At that point, I thought I'd either continue to wait or maybe just go ahead and buy the Phantom 4. I did just learn that the Mavic was on the horizon a couple weeks before the official Karma release. So, I continued to wait. When the Mavic was announced I was immediately excited. It folds up like the Karma... only way smaller yet. Has about 35% greater battery life, obstacle avoidance, insane range, and "follow me" mode (duh, of course). And... whoa! DJI Goggles coming soon?!? It seemed just like what I had been waiting for! I felt both excited and disappointed at the same time. I was like "why didn't GoPro make the Mavic?" It really did seem like the Mavic brought all the excitement I was hoping for in the Karma. I really wanted to love the Karma. GoPro is a USA based company and I'm sure the customer support will blow away DJI, but at the end of the day I had to go with what I thought was the better product.
It seems like crickets over hear compared to all the talk about the Mavic at phantompilots.com and mavicpilots.com. Not a good sign for GoPro. I hope they don't give up! I hope they convince me to buy their drone next time.
